One More Reminder!
There has been some confusion about the math bee and the pledge forms/money raised. Hopefully this will clear up any confusion.
The children have 3 chances to be entered into the raffle drawings. They only need to return the PLEDGE FORMS to be entered into the drawings. Any money raised is not due until February 15th. If they do not return the pledge forms tomorrow, they still have 2 more chances to be included in raffles: Feb. 8th and Feb. 15th.
Thank you for your support!
Reminders……..
There will be an early release day on Friday. School will be dismissed at 12:30 and lunch will be served.
Pledge forms for the math bee are due back on Friday. All children who return their forms, even if they have not collected any pledges, will be entered into the first drawing. If you are unable to find your child's form, you may download another one at www.hurldpto.com.
Hurld Herald – January 27, 2012
Our MathBee Challenge Fundraiser begins on Monday! You should be receiving pledge sheets home today to give you ample time to ask family and friends for their support. We had a wonderful math enrichment program today, Mad About Math, which helped to encourage the children to think about math in a fun, positive way! On Monday we will hold an All School Pep Rally to kick off our fundraiser. We encourage the children to wear Hurld School colors of Burgandy and Gold as well as any Hurld School Spirit Wear they might have to help keep the students motivated!
February's PTO meeting will be on Wednesday, February 1st, at 7:00 pm. in our school cafeteria. Mrs. Carabello, our school Adjustment Counselor, will be there to speak about her role in the school, as well as bullying and parenting concerns that you may have. Mrs. Mills will also be there to speak to and answer questions about the curriculum.
MCAS Dates are posted at the bottom of this posting. If you have children in grades 3, 4, or 5, it is vitally important that they are present during this time. Please do not schedule any appointments or family vacations during these dates. Thank you for your cooperation.
Our Journey Through Books program is well underway! We've got approximately 65% of the students already on their way from California's Golden Gate Bridge heading towards The Bunkerhill Monument. Please help your child help us reach our goal of 100% participation this year! The following students have already completed their Journey. They have received a book from Mrs. Mills, and they are on their way to Journey # 2. Michael Doherty, Devesh Pathak, Alison Doherty, Emma Murphy, Danny McGahan, Devin O'Connell, Melissa Ferranti, Abigail Murphy, Joshua Dillon, Jackson Young, Aiden Young, Madison Dillon, Noah Stebbins, Tyler Hewitt, Grace Cushing, Jordan Cote, Skylar Cote, Henning Hoene. NICE JOB!!!!!!
Very soon, our cafeteria will be moving toward a computerized, ticketless program, called POS. Some of you might be aware of this if you have students in other schools. Until this is put in place, Ginger is only able to sell the students 5 tickets per week. Please be on the lookout for a detailed letter from Aramark, our lunch program.
Kindergarten Registration will be on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. If you have a child turning 5 years old by September 1, 2012, please call the school office at 781 937-8238 and let them know your child will be registering. If you know someone who has a child that will be coming, please pass the information on to them.
This coming Thursday, February 2nd, The Hurld School student body will be going on an all school field trip to Stoneham Theater to see Beauty and the Beast. Thank you to the PTO for paying for the buses. Without their continued support, we would not be able to enrich our students' education in the rich way that we do! If you haven't already done so, please return the permission slip for your child.
Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring Jean Hamburg, the Licensed Social Worker, who came and spoke about her program, Cooperation Counts. It was a well attended gathering, and all parents went home with some very useful, concrete strategies to help with behavior issues they might be experiencing with their children. If you would like some help in this area, please contact Mrs. Mills, who has some information about this program.
I posted this reminder last week, however, I continue to see people using unsafe methods when dropping off and picking up their children. PLEASE FOLLOW THES GUIDELINES AND KEEP ALL OF OUR CHILDREN SAFE!
Reminder: Our parking lot is a very dangerous place. Please follow the rules when dropping off and picking up your children.
- Do not pass the school busses if they have their lights on and/or the stop sign out.
- Do not get out of your car if you are blocking anyone in. Sometimes teachers/staff need to leave right at the end of the day, and it creates chaos if they are blocked in.
- Do not allow your children to cross the driveway by themselves. Either pull up to the curb or come across the driveway to get them. Children should exit and enter cars from the curb side. Do not stop in the middle of the driveway.
- Do not park at the top of the driveway where the busses enter. They can not make the turn if you are in their way.

This Thursday, 1/19, will be our 2nd grade Snack/Raffle table. Students in 2nd grade are asked to bring in snack items and/or raffle items to sell. All students are welcome to bring in quarters to purchase a snack or raffle tickets. Please read the following in regard to the snack/raffle table changes.
In keepin with the WPS's Wellness Policy, we are working towards giving our students more healthy choices here at the Hurld School. With that in mind, we have made a decision to re-work the way in which we raise money for the classrooms through the PTO. Our "Cookie Tables" will now be called "Snack/Raffle Tables" and we will no longer be selling candy. Also, children will be allowed to purchase 1 snack only at the tables. We understand that many of us do not have time to make homebaked treats, so as an alternative, we will encourage you to send in snacks from the "A" list of acceptable healthier snacks. You may click on the link to the right to access the list. Why not send in individual servings of pretzels, goldfish, grapes, or other items on the list? The other alternative to snacks continues to be raffle items. Raffle tickets may be purchased in unlimited quantities. Children look forward to hearing the winners of the raffles each time we have a snack/raffle table. The more raffle items there are, the better their chances are! Some great ideas for raffles include jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, or bubbles. These will all encourage children to head outside after school instead of to the couch to watch TV or play video games. This link provides some terrific ideas for healthy school snacks: http://sfusdfood.org/pdfs/snackform.pdf. Thank you to Janet Urban, our snack/raffle table coordinator, for this information.
