The Woburn Memorial High School fine art department is proud to announce that three students from the department recently won awards at the Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program.

Junior Jamiee Winer won a silver key for her computer graphics movie poster created in Mrs. Susan Thifault’s class. Junior Laura Standley won honorable mention for her fine art piece that she created in Mrs. Donna Child’s fine art class. Senior Billy Hammond also received and honorable mention for his photograph that he took for Ms. Sarah Dugan’s photography course.

The gold and silver key winners art work is on display at the State Transportation Building at 10 Park Plaza in Boston, through April 7, 2011. The fine art department recently went on a field trip to Boston to view the artwork.

More than 1,500 works in fifteen mediums, including photography, painting, and fashion, are on view. The creations are the work of students in grades 7 through 12, from 320 schools across Massachusetts, who won individual Gold Key and Silver Key awards in the 2011 Scholastic Art & Writing competition. More than 400 schools participated in the program.

The Scholastic Art Awards program was created in 1927 by Scholastic, Inc. in an effort to foster the confidence of young artists, and is the largest running program of its kind in the country. The Boston Globe affiliate program was launched in 1950 by a group of Massachusetts art educators and Globe staff. Student work is judged by members of the art and education communities who have had experience with young artists and writers.

MEFA (Massachusetts Educational Finance Authority) is presenting a seminar on How to Pay for College. An overview of the college billing cycle options for paying college tuition and understanding various award letters will be some of the topics covered. If you have a high school senior who is hearing about college acceptances, this is a valuable seminar to attend. For a listing of locations and to register, please visit www.mefa.org/RSVP.
